Election 2012

POLL: Presidential Primaries, Super Tuesday 2012 – Who Will Win?

Who will win the Super Tuesday primaries? Romney or Santorum? Gingrich or Paul? What do you think about President Obama? Take our poll and let us know.

Tuesday, March 6 is “Super Tuesday” and ten states across the country will be holding primaries or caucuses to help decide the Republican nominee for president in the general election this fall. Massachusetts, along with Alaska, Georgia, Idaho, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Vermont and Virginia head to the polls. Former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney, Former Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum, Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich and Texas Congressman Ron Paul are all still vying for the Republican nomination. President Barack Obama is not facing a challenger for the Democratic Party’s nomination, so all eyes will be on the Republicans, as it has been for most of this campaign season. Super Tuesday is a key date in the race …

Sen. Clark: Budget Season

State Senator Katherine Clark outlines the challenges of setting the Fiscal Year 2013 budget.

Budget season is upon us on Beacon Hill.  As we plunge into the budget debate for Fiscal Year 2013, which begins July 1, 2012, we again face a constrained fiscal environment. While the Massachusetts economy is recovering and our unemployment rate is improving, we still face significant challenges: getting people back to work in good-paying jobs, growing local businesses, and supporting our schools, cities and towns as they work to provide vital services. In late January, Governor Patrick made his budget recommendations to the legislature, at a level of 32.3 billion, a 2.98 percent increase from this year’s estimated spending level.  Working with the Governor and my colleagues in the legislature, and with your ongoing input, I believe we …

Candidate Statement: Robert Quinn

Quinn is running for a Board of Assessors position.

[Editor's note: The following is a statement from Board of Assessors candidate Robert Quinn. It has been republished without editing.] To the Citizens of Reading:   My name is Bob Quinn and I am running for a seat on Reading’s Board of Assessors. Last spring, the Selectman sponsored Article 22 which sought to amend our Home Rule Charter by recasting the Board of Assessors as an appointed body. Town Meeting overwhelmingly rejected this Article, opting instead to preserve the independence of the Board of Assessors through the continued direct election of its membership.     However, the proponents of Article 22 did raise a legitimate concern that the time and expense inherent in the election process may discourage otherwise qualified …

Candidate Statement from Marsie West

Candidate for RMLD Board of Commissioners candidate Marsie West has issued the following statement.

As candidate for Commissioner for Reading Municipal Light Department, I’d like to introduce myself.  My husband and I have lived in Reading for 18 years.  We have 2 sons educated in Reading schools, which prepared them well for their college years.     A volunteer in town government and youth organizations since 1997, I’m currently active in Town Meeting and a member of Reading Finance Committee for 9 years, serving as Chair for 2 years.  As a member of the Audit and Finance Committees, I have reviewed RMLD financial reports over the years.  I also served as Treasurer of Cub Scout Pack 728 for 4 years and managed 6 Destination Imagination / Odyssey of the Mind teams across 9 years.  I bring strong financial and analytical skills to the …

I am very impressed to see that Marsie West has had the courage to "call out" some of the RMLD members for putting their "personal ideologies" above the best interests of the ratepayers. This, combined with her nine years of experience serving on the Finance Committee, makes me confident that she will be a great Commissioner for the RMLD.   more ›

Letter to the Editor: Town Meeting Member Declares Support for Herrick

Ron D'Addario has written a letter of endorsement for Karen Gately Herrick's Board of Selectmen bid.

I will vote for Karen Herrick this Tuesday, and I ask you to do the same. I have sat near Karen at town meeting for a number of years. Although we have not always voted the same way on various issues, I was always impressed with Karen’s knowledge of the issues.  In addition to her years on town meeting, Karen has served on the Reading Solid Waste Committee, the Reading Tax Classification Committee, and the Reading Historical Commission. These are not necessarily high profile committees; nevertheless, they need volunteer residents to accomplish the needed town work. Without a spot light, Karen volunteered to do just that. Furthermore, with a youngster in our middle school system, Karen has served on a number of committees at the Wood End …

Mr. White, I totally agree with you. Watching Ms. Herrick speak at Town Meetings in the past it is clear she takes positions on issues that impact her personally with little consideration for others in the community. There is nothing impartial about her approach to matters and she has not convinced me that is is qualified for this important elected office.   more ›

Election 2012

Letter to the Editor: RMLD Board Member Endorses West

Phil Pacino is officially throwing his support behind Marsie West for election to the Reading Municipal Light Department Board of Commissioners.

Letter to the editor  Today I rise in support of Marsie West and ask the voters of the Town of Reading to elect her to the Reading Municipal Light Department Board of Commissioners. Marsie first of all has a strong financial and organizational background that will be an asset to both the Commission and the Department. Her business background as 1st Vice President in the Operations Strategy Group at BNY Mellon will bring a wealth of knowledge and expertise to the Commission. Marsie will represent the consumer in the RMLD service territory. Her work with the Town of Reading Finance Committee and Reading Town Meeting has demonstrated to me her concern for the citizens of the Town. I feel she will bring those attributes in a way that best …

Letter to the Editor: Remembering Former Teacher Fred Wales

The Reading education community lost beloved figure on Feb. 22, when longtime RMHS and Parker Middle School teacher Fred Wales passed away at his home in Beverly.

Reading is a community known for its priority on education and it is a district focused on innovation and continuous improvement. Some people may think that is a new emphasis. There are so many new buzzwords; STEM (Science Technology Engineering Math), Real World Problem Solving, project based learning, capstone projects, and whole child approach. There was a teacher in Reading 28 years ago who embodied all of these best practices. He did all of these things in his classroom and in the Fine and Industrial Arts department, quietly and without fanfare or buzzwords. He was ahead of his time in so many ways, including encouraging students and especially women to pursue careers in science, math, architecture, and engineering. He understood that…

Mr. Wales was my favorite teacher. :-) I actually contacted the Chronicle about a year ago around his 100th birthday and suggested they write an aritcle about him, but they never did. I thought it would be good for people to learn more about the long time Reading teacher (and friend) who was always teaching and learning. It was always interesting visiting him at his house, seeing the models he'd …   more ›

POLL: Should Brown Stop Comparing Himself to Ted Kennedy?

What do you make of the latest controversy in the U.S. Senate race?

Should Scott Brown stop running radio ads that compare his views with the late Senator Ted Kennedy?  Brown recently came under fire for running radio ads that contend that Kennedy would have agreed with him that employers and insurers should be able to exclude health care coverage of drugs and procedures that go against their moral views. Ted Kennedy's son, Patrick, asked Brown to stop running the ads in which he says, “Like Ted Kennedy before me, I support a conscience exemption in health care for Catholics and other people of faith.”  However, a look at bills that Ted Kennedy sponsored in the 1990s and 2000s show that Kennedy would have required all employers who offer prescription drug coverage to include contraception coverage, …

Hey Patricia, I guess "Joe the Plumber" from Ohio has a chance to get elected to Congress this year. Check out this link: http://www.boston.com/news/politics/articles/2012/03/07/ohios_joe_the_plumber_gets_gop_nod_for_congress/?p1=Well_Politics_links Though I must say that I highly doubt how effective he's going to be in helping craft legislation for our country.   more ›

Letter to the Editor: Resident Voices Support for Turco

Reading resident Kevin Sexton penned the following letter in support of Al Turco for the State Republican Committee.

Dear Editor,  There is a low profile, but important, race that deserves the attention of Reading voters who will take a Republican ballot at the March 6 Presidential Primary election. Specifically, in addition to voting for GOP Presidential candidates, Republican voters in our new State Senate district will elect members of the Massachusetts Republican State Committee.  The Fifth Middlesex District now consists of Reading, Stoneham, Wakefield, Melrose and Malden as well as precincts 1,2,3 and 8 in Winchester.  As a member of the Reading Republican Town Committee, I would like to tell you why I'm supporting Al Turco for re-election to a four-year term on the Massachusetts Republican State Committee representing the Fifth Middlesex District…
